Cutting off a toe to save a foot

Several members of my family have experienced the difficult decision of giving up a part of themselves to save themselves. For some, it involved an amputation resulting from diabetic neuropathy and one member of my family required radical surgery for breast cancer.

What does all of that mean in terms of this site?

Geek’s 2007 SIR Abstract Report: Comparison of Partial to Complete Uterine Fibroid Embolization

The Society of Interventional Radiology held its 32nd annual Scientific Meeting from March 1 – March 6, 2007. Multiple abstracts and posters were presented. I’ll try my best to discuss as many of the fibroid-related ones as I can. Yes, this is (hopefully) the first in a series of very geeky reports.

What’s involved with pre-op testing before a fibroid procedure?

I sense that some of you get a little nervous about pre-op testing so here’s some information. I’ll start with a quote from Lab Tests Online that provides a guide on test preparation:

One of the most important factors in determining the accuracy and reliability of your lab test is you, the patient. After all, it is a sample from your body (blood, urine, or some other specimen) on which the test will be performed. Therefore, it is essential that you do the following to ensure that the results will be useful:

Tell me about Lupron, Synarel, and Zoladex (gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists)

One upon a time (months ago), I wrote a post on gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) agonists but I don’t think anyone really saw it. I guess it’s the name. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonist does sound kind of strange.

How about Lupron, Synarel, and Zoladex? Yeah, still a little funny sounding but better. Lupron, Synarel, and Zoladex all belong to the class of drugs known as (everybody chime in)… gonadotropin-releasing hormone agonists (GnRH agonists).

What should I carry with me to the hospital before my fibroid surgery?

Received an email request from Tina (1/24) about a specific list of what to carry to the hospital when going in for fibroid surgery. Thanks for the great suggestion!

I’ll start with a quote from the post that listed what I carried. Remember, I had a Uterine Fibroid Embolization and only stayed overnight.

EclecticGeek, why do you keep asking us to visit the Fibroid Forum?

Yes, there’s a Fibroid Forum here! I really want you to visit it more. Why? Two reasons. Well, probably more than that but let’s focus on these two: Read the rest of this entry »

Trying for pregnancy (ttc) after your fibroid procedure (Abdominal Myomectomy)?

Received an email message from Gwyn who wanted a forum about trying to conceive after an Abdominal Myomectomy. Thanks for the suggestion!

Fibroid free left a detailed comment (one of her “novelettes”) in the “fertility and fibroids” forum a few months ago. Here is an excerpt:

fibroid free: Started with a new GYN – explained my symptons and she said sounds like fibroids and ordered an MRI and recommended me to a OB/GYN RE. Never even thought about a RE (GYN who specializes in Reproductive Endocrinology otherwise know a Fertility Doctor) but ended up to be the best choice of doctor. Went to see her and poured out my want to still have children. She told me about the AM and we scheduled surgery onyl to have her call me and admit she did not have the skill level needed to assure removal of fibroids without a hysto and could not guarentee fertility ( no doctor can guarentee but she was not the one to do the surgery) .. SHE refered me to the FERTILITY DOCTOR. Sigh I thought at first….never expected to be in this position…… and so we set up an appointment. Read the rest of this entry »

Did you see Oprah trying acupuncture?

Watched Oprah today. It was another medical show with Dr. Mehmet Oz. Yeah, I’m a geek and love the medical stuff.

Anyway, there on the TV was a licensed acupuncturist (Dr. Daniel Hsu) treating Oprah. I thought… Wow!

Oprah discusses the coolest things on her show. Now, acupuncture. Even cooler was what Dr. Oz said afterwards about alternative medicine. He mentioned “energy medicine” and globalization. I became animated. I know some woman who visit the alternative therapy forum I created think EclecticGeek is against it but you have no clue how far that is from the truth. The real issue with fibroids

Been blogging here since May 2006. There is something I’m noticing and it is my responsibility to bring it to the attention of all.

The sum total of YOUR existence (mind/body/spirit) will carry you to the point of your medical decision. Just because you wouldn’t choose a particular fibroid treatment option, please don’t pretend it doesn’t exist or say words that would take it off the table for another woman. If you want someone to walk in your shoes, you have to be willing to walk in the shoes of others. Read the rest of this entry »

Are you following the “Watchful Waiting” fibroid treatment option?

Many women are following this fibroid treatment option so I decided to set up a separate thread for discussion. From the MayoClinic.com Uterine Fibroids Decision Guide:

Watchful Waiting

Your doctor will look for signs of rapid fibroid growth or interference with nearby structures such as your bladder or intestines.

Report to your doctor any new signs and symptoms that could signal problems, including heavy menstrual bleeding, back or pelvic pain, urinary frequency or constipation.

What questions should I ask my fibroid doctor during follow-up visits after my procedure?

ask doctors questions post-opReceived an email request for a thread on post-Abdominal Myomectomy questions to ask during a follow-up visit. I have a previous post that list questions to ask a fibroid doctor but most of those deal with information you need pre-op. I’ll tweak a few from that post and stick them here for you to ask post-op: Read the rest of this entry »

Just what are your uterine fibroid tumor treatment options?

uterine fibroid treatment option decisionsBeen blogging here for a number of months on the medical decisions I made to finally address my uterine fibroid tumor problem. I consider myself fortunate because a number of women have decided to share their choices as well. It’s now time to string some of the Forum “threads” together and assemble a post that lists fibroid treatment options.

I’ll start with some general information from the MayoClinic.com Uterine Fibroids Decision Guide. Visit the site for treatment details including what to expect, common concerns, and pros and cons. I’ll also include links to related posts on this site for each of the options.
