Hi Donna

So happy for you and your little one and glad to hear your story. I hope your fibroids post partum decide to "cool it" and become a thing of the past. I hope you become pain free soon and that your fibroids are no longer a topic for you!

Sorry for this very long post, but I thought I'd update what has transpired over the last 48 hours, since my last visit to the ER. I am just over 18 weeks pregnant and have multiple small fibroids and one large (now 10 cm - early pregnancy was 7 cm).

When I came home after the ER, I started suffering the worst pain I could possible imagine. Nothing comparable to the pain that drove me to the ER the day before. It was extreme stabbing every few minutes, shook my whole body and made me literally scream out in pain. We returned to Emergency, I was yelling out with each contraction-like stab. They were becoming not only stronger but more frequent. Finally got to the front door and they brought a wheel chair, - I couldn't sit, but somehow managed to lie down on a bed. I was gripping the rails and every 30 seconds or so, I was hit by the pain, it consumed me. They knew about my fibroid, however my white blood cell count was found to be high and the pain was in the same place as my biggest fibroid (10 cm) but also where my appendix might be as well. They sent me in for ultasound, baby was ok, good heart tones (THANKFULLY), cervix closed, no bleeding. But they saw a pocket of fluid near the fibroid. They immediately suspected appendicities. The surgeon came in and said, it might be the fibroid, but he couldn't rule out appendicities due to the location of the pain. He didn't know where to open me up, couldn't do laprascopic because of my pregnancy and location of my fibroid. They sent me in for MRI and decided it was likely just the fibroid. Despite morphine, I was still in immense pain. Everybody was amazed, as was I...Finally they gave me dilotted and the contraction like pain started to subside slowly. After a few hours, the pain was more tolerable.

I am now in my second night at the hospital and they are tranferring me to oral pain therapy. They are giving me a bit of Motrin, to help with inflammation as well. I still have trouble standing and moving, but at least i can lie down and sleep somewhat. The surgeon came in to check on me and when he touched my right side, it still very painful - turns out the fibroid is about 2 cm below the surface.
This has been a journey - and interestingly enough, the doctors and nurses tell me they haven't seen such pain with fibroids. Truly, I feel validated and comforted in being able to hear other people's stories and hope that I can help others by sharing mine.

While scary, at least I understand a lot more. The lesson was not to just "accept" the pain with some Vicodin, but to proactively get more intensive care, so that I could protect my baby and my body and be monitored appropriately.

I did call the large teaching hospital where I had my amniocentesis some time ago. They are going to see me once discharged, but have told me that that my symptoms are consistent with that of a degenerating fibroid.

Though far from over, I am taking each day at a time and thankful that all is ok.

And another thing. I have heard anecdotally that green tea shrinks fibroids. I am adding some into my daily routine.

This site gave me great encouragement, too. I lived with the pain the first time for about four days and by the time I went in, I couldn't even have them touch my belly, couldn't get out of bed by myself and was having contractions. I just kept thinking it was Braxton Hicks because I was only 21 weeks, and I knew I couldn't be in labor.

My doctors were truly amazing. They believed in me, and worked very hard to keep me out of the hospital.

My little guy is 5.5 months, and crawling already! Hang in there. Every day is a good thing. Every week is a better thing.

Take it easy as much as you can. As dreadful as it is, it does pass quickly and soon enough you will be holding that precious little bundle.

I just went back for a check-up, and my big fibroid is still about 6 cm. I am waiting for my cycles to start back to see how bad they are. As soon as I can't stand the symptoms any more, they are advising a hysterectomy becuase of the fibroids. Probably an open surgery. I'm in no rush.

Donns,

Thank you for your support and taking the time to respond and for sharing your story and advise. You have encouraged me and in this excruciating period, you have given me hope.

Mt only wish is that I will carry to term and the baby will be ok.

As suggested, I am trying the ice and heat - the Vicodin every 6 hours doesn't do much. I am trying to remain hopeful that this initial bout will subside and all will be ok..

Again, thank you for your response. It meant a lot to me. Too bad more doctora don't have your bedside manner;

Susie,
Welcome to the club, but sorry you are having such pain. I want you to know that I somehow managed to carry a 7 pound baby to term, despite many fibroids and several bouts of the degeneration pain. many of us found relief from ice or heat. I slept with an ice bag for a couple months. It helps if you stay ahead of the pain, taking the Vicodan early in the pain cycle. It is hard to catch up with pain management once it gets really bad. Also, make sure to keep drinking. dehydration makes things worse.

You will prbably find the pain will come and go for a few weeks. Mine ended around 30 weeks. It was truly the worst pain I've e
ver experienced and at the worst, I didn't think I could make it the whole rest of the pregnancy, but it does subside.

thank you for sharing your stories, to help me understand. i am now 18 weeks pregnant, with a number of fibroids, one large one. i never experienced any pain prior and my fibroids were not even an issue for me. out of the blue, two days ago, i experienced intense cramping, was in the ER and then was told it was "likely the fibroid". went home, pain became much worse and finally succumbed to taking vicodin. Vicodin gives me some relief - the pain is unbelievable. no position (sitting, lying down, walking) is comfortable. my greatest solace is that the baby is ok. i can't imagine continuing in this kind of pain and can only hope that it won't last too much longer. i was told that pain might be an issue, but was not prepared for this..the doctors are very suprisingly dismissive, but perhaps its because they can't do anything. i couldn't find any info or get any answers - until i found this site. thank you.

Hi ladies, my name is katrina and i too am about 11 weeks pregnant suffering from fibroid pain. I went to the doctor twice this week, had an ultrasound performed and my baby had a heartbeat and was moving around in there just find. One of my fibroids is pushing up against the sac where the baby is also. I am experiencing extreme pain also. I passed one blood clot yesterday and it scared me to death. I had multiple miscarriages about 7 years ago. I am so encouraged to read the blogs. I find myself praying constantly not only for my baby, but just to relieve some of this pain. I will pray for all of us and i am so glad to know there are others who suffer from this and we can support each other.

Thank You,
Katrina.

Hi KC - to explain the pain to others compare it to a heart attack, as the pain from that is due to lack of blood flow to the heart which is similar to what happens when a fibroid degenerates. Sometimes degeneration is referred to as infarction & a heart attack is called cardiac infarction. When I found this out I thought no wonder it is so painful!

Wow!!! I too am experiencing severe abdominal pain on the left side. I currently have 2 fibroids (7.5 and 3cm). My Dr. keeps saying to put warm towel, take tylenol and warm baths. I just don't understand why they won't take me off work and agree to fill out short term disability. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get off work? I can't explain the pain without someone looking at me as if I'm a first time mother complaining. It's so frustrating!!
Thanks for reading...

hi Denise,
I would get it checked out if it is concerning you. They never seemed concerned so you have to advocate for anything that seems off to you. They can't feel what's going on in your body. It can't hurt getting it checked out and will give you some piece of mind if it really is nothing.
Let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I'm pregnant with my first, 22 weeks today. I also have 2 fibroids within the wall of the uterus. One is about 18 cm and the other is 13 cm. I have 2 bouts of the painful degeneration, both lasting at least 2 weeks. One of the fibroids is pressing on my cervix. The other has shifted into my pelvis. It was further up, but on saturday it moved into my pelvis. Ever since then I've been having pain, but it feels different than the other 2 times. My question is how can I tell if I'm having contractions or fibroid pain?

I told my doctor's nurse about it shifting into my pelvis and they weren't concerned about that. However, I didn't mention the pain.

What should I do?

Thanks

Mika
Hang in there. I had pain like that, too. Plain tylenol did nothing, but my doctors gave me a strong dose of ibuprofin for several days (this cannot be done after a certain point, maybe 26 or 27 weeks -- but I don't remember exactly-- because it harms the baby's heart) to bring down the swelling. That helped for a while, as did percoset.

If you need the painkillers, take them. I was in labor around 21 weeks because of the fibroid degeneration pain. I was on percoset off an on for most of the second trimester. It got better around 28 weeks and I have a perfectly healthy thriving baby.

What a blessing it is to have found this site. I have been in so much pain these last few days, that I keep saying, I don't think I can make it. I'm 22 wks pregnant, with not only a very short cervix, but a 10cm fibroid that is growing in the direction of my liver, gall bladder, bladder, and intestines. I've been constipated...and now have resorted to a stool softener along with an ice pak and tylenol which does nothing. This is the worst pain I've ever felt in my life, and didn't know so many other women were going thru the same thing. The doctor said it may be degenerating, but how much longer do I have to bear this pain?

Hi hopeagain,
I've never posted here before but I just recently found this site and spent the last few days reading all the posts dating back the last few years. It's so encouraging as I find myself in a similar boat to all of you. I have 2 fibroids. Get twinges and sharp pains every once in a while. I lost my first pregnancy in November because I didn't understand fibroids and didn't really advocate for better care. I had degeneration pain for 10 days with only tylenol and my uterus got so agitated I had contractions and subsequently pre-term labour. I have lots of guilt that I didn't go to the hospital sooner, I thought I could grit it out and it would pass. My doctor was an ass also and they didn't admit me the one time I did go and kept telling me its normal, that being pregnant isn't comfortable. Anyway, we have been monitoring the broids for the last three months and one is completely gone ( I had 3) or too small to see and the othre two have shrunk so the 3 specialists I saw were against surgery as they are on the outside. I know if I get pregnant again they wil act up, as they give me little twinges and pains now and I'm not even pregnant yet but if I can avoid surgery and have a better pain management plan and hospital and specialist monitoring which I have been assured for next time than I am willing to take the chance.
All this to say is that I am 9 DPO. I wanted to test today but felt it was too early. BTW, what is the best time? My temp was98.6 this morning which is high for me so I hope its a good sign. I just learned about all this charting stuff recently. Hopeagain07 I hope you and I are sharing good news this coming weekend! Baby dust to you and to all the ladies out there who are pregnant or trying. Even though we have 'broids we can do this!

I came to the site because I am trying to find more out about fibroids in pregnancy. I actually had a submucosal one removed about 6 months before getting pregnant. Now I am 13 weeks and there is either another one or the same one grew back. It is relatively smaller 3cm but growing very fast...about a month ago it was half that size. So I'm concerned about how big it might get at this rate. Hopefully it doesn't cause me or the baby problems.

Anyway the reason I am posting is when I was deciding whether to have the first one out with my RE, she discussed the pain during pg issue. She said one of her patients was in so much pain she had to be hospitalized with an epidural for the last 3 months of her pregnancy. Anyway I have seen a few posts here from women with truly excruciating, unable to sleep kind of pain and wanted to report this potential option mentioned by my doctor for severe cases. Obviously it's not something you'd want to do if you can manage at home with painkillers, but for women experiencing so much pain they cannot sleep hardly at all, or that feels like the worst pain they can imagine, hospitalization with an epidural seems humane and reasonable, should provide complete relief, and will not hurt the baby. Wishing you all luck and relief from your pain!

I am all for supporting people who don't want pain killers -- just be very careful and monitor for contractions. The degenerating pain caused me to have uterine irritability and contractions at 22 weeks.

I did not try massage, but ice worked well for me. Heat worked well for others.
