How are you feeling after your Endometrial Ablation?

Second post based on the great comment left describing a personal experience with endometrial ablation and laparoscopic myomectomy. Since I added the full comment in the previous post, I’ll just include an excerpt here:

Mary: I just had a laparoscopic myomectomy and hysteroscopy/endometrial ablation two days ago.

Pre-surgical issues and diagnosis: I had a huge, slow growing external fibroid that was about 9 * 10 cm at its peak, plus several smaller internal fibroids that were the cause of my long, heavy, painful periods. My gynecologist referred me to a surgeon who is head of Ob-Gyn at a local hospital and teaches at a major Canadian medical school. (Very relaxed guy, easy to talk to, and well-respected.) He checked me out and declared that the internal fibroids could be taken care of with hysteroscopy and ea.

You know I must leave the obligatory links for more information:

To add to my previous post the WHY never came out. I asked and basically the ablation would take care of the symptom…the bleeding.
The ultrasound would show any obvious abnormality and the MD stated he could take a look thru hysteroscopy prior to ablation for more info. and would submit a sample for pathology if he thought there was a problem. I just think this is really fast for a problem I have only had for a few weeks. No major bleeding just more frequent. hmmm.

I had the procedure last may 2009. so far i have not experienced any abnormal abdominal pain or abnormal vaginal discharges. My problem is severe headache that has no relief. my blood pressure has been running high which is so abnormal for me. My question is : Does ablation have any connection to these complaints that i am having? Does anyone out there with this procedure experienced the same thing that i have? please help.

I had the Thermachoice procedure done 2 days ago. I am still sore and have abdominal swelling. I have not seen any complaints about swelling. Has anyone encountered this symptom? I have very little to no discharge now.

I had ablation done in May and I have horribly painful periods so bad that I double up in pain and I also get bad headaches about 2 days before I start my periods. Although they dont last as long I have no choice but to see the doctor tomorrow this is my second period now with this horrible pain. Seems to come from around my belly button to my pelvic bone> Also a strange clear snot like substance comes from vagina and bowels as well! Should I be worried???

In our mental health practice, we just saw a woman who had an ablation about a year ago. She has had no periods, but has regular PMS symptoms. She has pain on her right side, but as time as gone by, she has developed severe panic attacks and fear of sleeping, and it is impacting her on all levels of her life, including parenting and workplace.

I just wondering if anyone else has experienced this. It seems to have been a rather rushed up procedure, and I’m not sure all the alternatives were adequately discussed.

Obviously, she could be grieving her loss of childbearing potential. Has anybody ever experienced severe mental health issues following this issues? Thanks!

I am 34 and am scheduled to have an ablation on March 29th. I am having second thoughts and was wondering if any of you who have had this procedure would do it again or maybe not mess with mother nature. Some of the things I have heard sound much wore than heavy bleeding and painful cramps. Any answers???

if you are having heavy bleeding and some severe situations i would, I had the proceedure done 8/5/09 and i love my results no pain so far and light periods to almost none i only need a panty liner when i do have my period and they don’t last as long….my experiences where not bad at all

      Char,
It’s been a couple of years ago for me and I spotted for about a month – a pink to orange discharge which was normal and may have had a slight odor, not objectionable and I’m told it was normal. I have had no problems what so ever and would definitely do it again – I was having horrible bleeding which has completely gone away, although my endometrium did grow back and I have normal periods.

BUT – I had a hysteroscopic endometrial ablation using a roller ball. It was not novasure, thermal or whatever else is out there. If you’ve read any of my earlier posts I think the kind I had done is better… and I hear of less problems with that kind. Keep in mind however that you will see more problems on this blog because the women with problems are searching for answers on the internet while the ones for whom it wasn’t a problem just go on with their lives.

So definitely don’t discount this procedure – I’m very glad I didn’t go and have a hysterectomy done. Let us know what you decide to do and how it goes.

To you and others posting here, please let us know what kind of EA you have done….

      Best!

      • Char Says:

Amy, I am having the Novasure and my doctor told me I will only be given a mild sedative and local freezing for the procedure. Sounds painful lol…the more I read and the more I think about it, the more I think about cancelling my appointment. Thank you for your insight and I’m happy everything worked well for you! I will let you know how things go if I do decide to go through with it. Take care!

      Char,
I am 49 and just had a NovaSure endometrial ablation done on March 4th. So far, so good. The procedure was done as an outpatient. I was put under enough that it was just like going to sleep and waking up. No intubation (tube down throat) was needed. I don’t remember the procedure at all. I had minimal pain in the recovery room. I was in and out of hospital in 4 1/2 hours. I was given Ibuprofen and Vicodin for use at home, but have not had to use the Vicodin because I have had only mild cramps like when having a period. I am spotting, but not much at all. I used ultrathin regular pads first day and now just pantiliners since. The following day, my husband and I went to the mall for dinner and a movie, and I felt fine. I’m not sure what type of ablation you are having done, but the NovaSure really seems to way to go, if you are a candidate for that procedure. Check out their website if you haven’t already. It seems the safest of the ablation procedures that I have read about. I hope this was helpful. Good luck!

I just had my procedure done March 3. 2010. Have not experience problems as of yet. The doctorshould have gave a brochure, it states that there will be discharge that will clear up in a couple of weeks. I also knew the risk of the procedure. So I hope after a couple of weeks everything would be fine. I had the procedure done due to that fact I had fibroids.

    • Char Says:

I have decided to NOT have the ablation done. I’m just not willing to risk possibly making my life worse. Thanks for everyones input!!

I had my Novasure done four days ago. I was wide awake during the procedure. It wasn’t too bad just a little uncomfortable. I did develop a fever the next day. I would encourage you to have your MD prescribe an antibiotic before the procedure is done to be safe. I had to go to the ER because they were not sure if I had an infection from the procedure. Feeling much better now, just mild discharge.
